Story

The Notki are a pair of dwarfs, also listed as Technotki (Technotek I and II), who sit side by side at Piłsudskiego 74 next to a white pot. The one in our photo smiles up at you from under a soft pointed cap, with a short trimmed beard and a calm, friendly face. They are called notes, and dwarfs say the two are always humming a tune only they can hear. Their neighbours, the Elektroludki, are only about 8 m away.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, the Notki were made by Sebastian Obst and appeared on 24 October 2018. They stand at Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego 74, as do the Elektroludki. Who commissioned them is not publicly documented.

Inspiration

The Polish word notki can mean 'little notes', which fits the alternative name Technotki, a playful mix of 'techno' and 'notes'. The photo shows a smiling dwarf with a short trimmed beard and a cap, beside a wall and a white planter. We found no source that explains the choice of theme, so the link to music is only an interpretation of the names.
