Story

Fanfarek is a bronze bandsman in full dress: a tall shako cap with an eagle and braided cords, epaulettes on his shoulders and a row of buttons down his coat. In the photo he blows into a trumpet with a wide bell, and a plaque on his chest reads 'Orkiestra Reprezentacyjna Wojsk Lądowych, ORWL'. A red brick wall behind him makes the bronze glow.

History & Significance

Fanfarek stands at ul. Obornicka 128, according to wromap.pl, which names no sculptor and gives no appearance date. The plaque on the statue names the Orkiestra Reprezentacyjna Wojsk Lądowych (ORWL), the Representative Orchestra of the Land Forces. The city's website says the Wrocław orchestra was founded on 30 August 1950, operated earlier as the Orchestra of the Silesian Military District, received its present name in 2011 and has performed in Belgium, Hungary, France, Austria and Canada. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since.

Inspiration

Fanfarek is a tribute to the Orkiestra Reprezentacyjna Wojsk Lądowych, as the plaque on the statue shows. His name comes from fanfara, the Polish word for a fanfare, and the trumpet in his hands matches it. The statue wears the uniform of a military band, including an eagle on the cap.
