Story
Gates wears a snug cap with a little oval badge that reads 'Gates' in curly script, and he gazes out over a long grey beard with a crinkled, good-humoured face. He stands on smooth paving slabs in front of a modern glass-and-steel building, as if he had just finished a shift and was watching the world go by. With a name like that, you might guess at a tech or business joke - but we found no source that says so.
History & Significance
Gates stands at Legnicka 48E in the Szczepin district, the same address wromap.pl gives for the neighbouring Wietrzysław, about 27 m to the north. We found no sculptor, sponsor or date for Gates in the sources we could check, so we leave them out. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose members painted dwarfs on walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.
Inspiration
Gates takes his name from the badge on his cap, which reads 'Gates'. We could not find a source explaining the reference - it may be the name of a firm or the building - and we will not guess. What the photo does show is a modern office-style frontage behind him.
