Story
Wietrzysław looks as if he is calling into the wind: one hand is raised flat, the other cupped near his mouth, and his bushy beard and tilted pointed cap seem to blow in the breeze. The letters VSB are carved into the front of his cap. He stands on smooth paving beside a glass entrance, a small bronze lookout who seems to be calling out a message to someone far away.
History & Significance
Wietrzysław stands at Legnicka 48E in the Szczepin district, the same address wromap.pl gives for Gates. Wromap.pl names the sculptor as Marta Mirynowska; we found no installation date or sponsor in the sources we could check. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose members painted dwarfs on walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.
Inspiration
His name looks like a playful blend of the Polish word for wind, 'wiatr', and the old Slavic name ending -sław - this is our reading of the name. The letters VSB on his cap point to a company or organisation, but we found no source confirming who it is, so we do not name one.
