Story

Geodeta is a surveyor at work. A bearded dwarf in a quilted vest, he stands next to a theodolite on a tripod - the instrument appears to be marked with the word WROCŁAW - and holds a handheld device in his other hand. He is taking a measurement, with a red-and-yellow painted base behind him, as if he were checking that the city is the right size.

History & Significance

Geodeta stands at aleja Kasztanowa 18 in the Borek district. Wromap.pl names the sculptor as Beata Zwolańska-Hołod; no installation date was found in the sources we could check. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose members painted dwarfs on walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.

Inspiration

The name 'Geodeta' is the Polish word for a land surveyor, and the theodolite on its tripod in the photo makes the theme unmistakable. We found no source saying who sponsored him, so we do not name a sponsor.
