Story
Grankoś is the sort of dwarf who smiles first and asks questions later. In the photo he sits on a flat surface in front of a gleaming glass shopfront, cap pulled down, beard neatly combed, with a grin so wide that his eyes have turned to crescents. Dwarf rumour has it that he laughs at his own reflection every morning, which is why the glass behind him always looks a little startled. Say hello and he will certainly smile back.
History & Significance
Grankoś stands at Komandorska 12 in the Przedmieście Świdnickie district. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has been filling its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. The sources we found give no sculptor, date of installation or sponsor for Grankoś, so we do not state any rather than guess.
Inspiration
Nothing we found explains where the name Grankoś comes from, so we do not invent a meaning. What the photo shows is a cheerful old dwarf in a soft cap, with pointed ears, a full beard and a jacket, in front of a reflective glass facade. His warm expression is what people remember.
