Story
Gryfinek is right at the pavement in front of a glass-fronted building, grinning, with one hand raised in a friendly wave. He rests his chin on a set of large bronze letters, as if they were a windowsill he were leaning on to watch the passers-by. His ears stick out from under a cap with a little bobble, and his beard is neat and curly. A cheerful greeter for everyone who passes.
History & Significance
Gryfinek stands at Jaworska 11-13 in the Szczepin district, according to wromap.pl. We found no sculptor, sponsor or installation date for him in the sources we could check, so we leave them out rather than guess. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose members painted dwarfs on walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.
Inspiration
We could not find a source that explains what Gryfinek stands for. The photo shows large bronze letters under his chin (the first letters look like U and R), which suggest a name or abbreviation of the building's occupant, but we could not confirm this. His name looks like a small, friendly form of the Polish word 'gryf', griffin - this is only our reading of the name, not a documented fact.
