Story
Kanonier Antek is a soldier-dwarf with a domed helmet, a rugged moustache and a thick beard that fans out over his jacket. In the photo he squints with a stern, determined look and wears a uniform with shoulder straps and buttons. 'Kanonier' means a gunner or artillery private, so he is probably guarding Cieszyńskiego street with a cannon in mind, though no source tells us his exact story.
History & Significance
Wromap.pl lists Kanonier Antek at Antoniego Cieszyńskiego 9, made by Arkadi and Anita Michalska and appearing on 9 December 2023. I found no second source for the authors or the date, and no sponsor. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001, and in 2005 the city commissioned sculptor Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection that now numbers well over 800.
Inspiration
'Kanonier' is the Polish rank for a gunner in the artillery, and the helmet and uniform in the photo fit a soldier. No source explains why he is here or whom he honours, so I do not claim a link.
