Story
Marysia Pięknisia is a little bronze girl who seems to be admiring herself. She sits at Widok 8 with her short hair swept to one side, a mischievous smile on her face and a round hand mirror held close to her chest. Walk up and you may find yourself reflected in it for a moment, which is surely the whole idea. She has a neighbour only 26 m to the south, Komisia i Euruś, so she is never short of company.
History & Significance
Wromap.pl and the Polish Wikipedia list of Wrocław's dwarfs both credit Tomasz Moczek as the sculptor and give the address as Widok 8. Wromap.pl gives her date of appearance as 7 March 2011; Wikipedia gives no date, so that date rests on one source. Wikipedia names a beauty-and-dermatology clinic, the Centrum Dermatologii Estetycznej "Bagłaj", as the place linked to her; wromap.pl does not mention a sponsor. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001, and in 2005 the city commissioned sculptor Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection that now numbers well over 800.
Inspiration
No source explains the story behind Marysia, but her props say a lot: in the photo she holds a round mirror, and her name means roughly 'a pretty little Mary' (pięknisia is Polish for a woman who is fond of her looks). The dermatology clinic named in Wikipedia fits the beauty theme, though neither source says that the clinic commissioned her.
