Story

Why is this dwarf frowning? What kind of question is that? Matematyk is busy: he adds, multiplies, raises numbers to a power and works out the area of a triangle. He sits in front of the Institute of Mathematics with a block covered in symbols, a thick beard and a deep wrinkle between his brows. According to the dwarf guide, the wrinkle is a good sign: once he finds the right answer, his brow smooths out.

History & Significance

Matematyk stands at plac Grunwaldzki 2, by the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Wrocław. The citygame guide writes the address as Grunwald Square 2/4. The sculptor is Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and wromap dates the dwarf to 1 December 2014. Polish Wikipedia gives the same sculptor and institute. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their roots to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now well over a thousand of them.

Inspiration

Matematyk celebrates mathematics and the people who study it. The dwarf guide calls him one of the most intelligent dwarfs in the world, a maverick mathematician who piles up simple and complex fractions; percentages give him a little trouble, but he can solve any problem and give the correct answer. The block next to him shows a triangle and a plus sign, which fits the theme.

Fun Facts

  • The dwarf guide says his frown is a good sign, because his brow smooths out once he finds the answer.
