Story

Polonek i Germanek are two bearded dwarfs in pointed caps who sit close together by the German Consulate General on Podwale. In the photo they face each other over a small, rough rounded object, as if they are about to share something. Look closely and see whether you can tell which one is Polonek and which one is Germanek!

History & Significance

Polonek i Germanek stand at Podwale 76, by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany. Both wromap.pl and the Polish Wikipedia list of Wrocław dwarfs name Beata Zwolańska-Hołod as their author, and wromap.pl says they appeared on 11 January 2016. We did not find who commissioned them. Wrocław's dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful, peaceful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.

Inspiration

Their names sound like 'little Pole' and 'little German', which fits their home by the German consulate. We found no source spelling out the idea behind them, so take that as a reading of the names rather than an official explanation.
