Story

Popowicjusz is a friendly guide of the Popowice area. He stands beside a metal signpost with a plate that reads OPATOWICE, tipping the brim of his cap with one hand as if greeting a passer-by and asking where you are headed. His beard is long, his eyes look up, and the autumn trees in the background make a pleasant frame for him.

History & Significance

Popowicjusz stands at Białowieska 90 in Pilczyce-Kozanów-Popowice Północne. The sculptor is listed as Piotr Makała, and wromap.pl gives 30 May 2017 as the date it appeared. The dwarf tradition began in 2001, when the Orange Alternative monument (Papa Krasnal) was unveiled on Świdnicka street, and the city has kept adding bronze dwarfs ever since. The sources I found do not say who commissioned or sponsored it.

Inspiration

His name seems to come from Popowice, the district that gives part of the area its name, and the signpost suggests the theme of directions and neighbourhoods. The sources I found do not explain it or name a sponsor, so this is a reading of the name and the photo.
