Story
Cymeliusz guards the treasures of the University Library. He wears a wide-brimmed hat, a full beard and a cheerful smile, and a boxy relief with a round, lens-like detail rises behind him. Legend among the local dwarfs says he knows which shelf hides the rarest volume and will never tell, but he nods approvingly at anyone who whispers.
History & Significance
Cymeliusz stands at Fryderyka Joliot-Curie 12, by the University Library (Biblioteka Uniwersytecka) in Wrocław, according to wromap and the citygame dwarf guide. Wromap names Tomasz Moczek as the sculptor, the artist who made the first five Wrocław dwarfs in 2005. The sources we found do not give an unveiling date or say who commissioned him. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their roots to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now well over a thousand of them.
Inspiration
The name Cymeliusz echoes the Polish word cymelium, which means a rare and valuable item in a library collection, such as an old manuscript or book. That fits a dwarf standing at a university library. The sources we found do not describe the story behind the statue, so we describe only what it shows.
