Story

Metrolog takes measuring very seriously. He stands at the entrance of the regional Office of Measures with a ruler held upright in one hand and round discs in front of him, in a pointed hat and a bushy beard. Legend among the local dwarfs says that he has measured every dwarf in town twice and found that, in bronze, all of them are exactly the right size.

History & Significance

Metrolog stands at Młodych Techników 61/63, at the entrance to the Okręgowy Urząd Miar (Regional Office of Measures) in Wrocław, according to Polish Wikipedia; wromap gives the address as Młodych Techników 61. The sculptor is Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and wromap dates the dwarf to 22 February 2019. The office is responsible for the legal verification and calibration of measuring instruments. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their roots to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now well over a thousand of them.

Inspiration

Metrolog is a tribute to metrology, the science of measurement, and to the people who check scales, meters and other instruments so that a kilo is a kilo everywhere. The ruler in his hand is the most obvious symbol of that work. The round discs in front of him and the weight-like shape in the corner of the photo fit the same theme, but no source we found explains them.
