Story

Zbigniew Zamęcki sits in the Szczepin district, about 1.6 km north-west of the Market Square, in a small green patch. The photo catches his bronze head and shoulders against grass and fallen autumn leaves: a calm, long-faced dwarf with a cap pulled close, gazing a little to one side as if listening to something nobody else can hear. wromap.pl lists him as Zbigniew Zamęcki Kosa, and the dwarf has a very human name, so it is easy to imagine a portrait of someone real.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. wromap.pl credits the sculptor Tomasz Moczek and gives the address Młodych Techników 58, where it warns that access may be limited by a barrier, fence or gate. The same address is given for two other dwarfs, Kazik and Spektrek. I found no source for the date he appeared or who commissioned him.

Inspiration

No source I found says who Zbigniew Zamęcki is or why this dwarf carries his name. wromap.pl adds the nickname Kosa to the name used in the city database. Because the name looks like a real person's, the dwarf may be a tribute, but that is a guess, not something I could confirm.

Fun Facts

  • wromap.pl lists him as Zbigniew Zamęcki Kosa, while the city database uses the shorter name.
  • wromap.pl credits the sculptor Tomasz Moczek.
  • Kazik, another dwarf at the same address, is only 10 m away.
  • Of the dwarfs at Młodych Techników 58, he is the one the photo shows outdoors, among grass and autumn leaves.
  • wromap.pl warns that access to this address may be limited by a barrier, fence or gate.

How to Find This Dwarf

Go to Młodych Techników 58 in Szczepin, about 1.6 km north-west of the Market Square. wromap.pl says access may be restricted, so look for him from the public side and do not enter private grounds. Kazik is 10 m west, Metrolog 53 m south and Spektrek 87 m north-west, which makes this a compact cluster of four dwarfs.
