Story
Pompeusz is the high-flyer of Na Grobli, about 1.9 km east of the Market Square. The photo, taken from a distance through bare tree branches, shows a tiny dark figure standing inside an oval opening high up in the red-brick wall of a building, small as a chess piece against the arched windows. Imagine him looking down on the street like a lord of the manor, having chosen the best viewpoint in the neighbourhood and no intention of coming down.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. wromap.pl gives the address Na Grobli 14 and warns that access may be limited by a barrier, fence or gate. It names no sculptor and no date, and I found no other source that does. The photo comes from far away and shows only a small figure, so I cannot describe his face or props.
Inspiration
No source I found explains the idea behind Pompeusz. His name echoes Pompey, the Roman general, but I found nothing that connects it to this dwarf. The photo only shows a small figure in an oval opening high on the building.
